The first part of the book is a general introduction to the Japanese writing system. The body of the text lists the 1,900 Tōyō Kanji, organized according to frequency of occurrence, complexity and didactic criteria. Each character is given in brush, handwritten and printed form, and contains the following data: stroke direction and stroke order; officially recognized readings (pronunciation) and German meanings; usually five compounds, with romanization, German meanings, and cross-reference numbers to the main entries for the other characters in the compounds. The kanji are fully indexed by the on-kun readings, by stroke count, and by radical.

The purpose of this Learner's Kanji Dictionary is to offer a handy and easy-to-use tool to look up the readings and meanings of Japanese words and names written with Chinese characters (kanji).
Each kanji entry is presented in extra-large form, with its strokes labeled in order by small numbers 1, 2, 3, ... positioned at the beginning of each stroke to show how the kanji is to be written. Handwritten pen and variant forms are also given, along with the character's general structure and components (graphemes).
The dictionary lists the most important 2,882 characters and 12,073 multi-character compounds, including all 1,945 Jōyō Kanji decreed for general use plus all 284 Jinmei-yō Kanji sanctioned for use in given names. In addition, the most frequently used approximately 700 surnames and 600 given names have been added.
One feature that makes this dictionary particularly useful for a beginner, or anyone else, is that every compound is listed under each of its characters. This multiple listing makes it possible to look up a compound under whichever of its characters is quickest to find, and it is a big help in deciphering sloppy handwriting or a blurred fax.
Entries are arranged according to the 79-Radicals System used in The Kanji Dictionary and in the Radical Index of Kanji & Kana, among others.

This dictionary enables the user to look up the pronunciation of a Japanese, Chinese, or Korean surname given in kanji (Chinese characters used in Japan), or conversely, given the romanized pronunciation of a surname, to look up how it is spelled in kanji.
More than 126,000 Japanese, 594 Chinese, and 259 Korean surnames are listed, in two volumes. Volume 1 is for looking up the readings of surnames given in kanji, and Volume 2 is for looking up the kanji spelling of surnames given in romanization.
In Volume 1, the 3,268 kanji and 123,532 kanji compounds used for surnames are arranged according to the 79-Radical System. This is the same radical system as in The Kanji Dictionary, The Learner's Kanji Dictionary, and in the radical index of Kanji & Kana, making it quick and easy to find further information about any kanji, if desired. Within the 79-Radical-System each kanji has a unique identifier – called its “descriptor” – under which it is listed in all reference books that use this search system.
Every name made up of two or more kanji is listed under each of its kanji. This multiple listing feature makes it possible to look up a multi-character name under whichever of its characters is the quickest to find. It is also a big help in deciphering sloppy handwriting or a blurred fax.
In Volume 2, all surnames are arranged in alphebetical order of their romanized spelling.
Japanese, Chinese, and Korean surnames are all romanized with a slightly modified version of the Hepburn (Japanese) pronunciation. In addition, Chinese surnames are spelled in Pyinyin and Wade-Giles romanization, and Korean surnames are transcribed in McCune-Reischauer, in a transcription based on katakana-style-Korean pronunciation, and, in some cases, another widely used romanization.

The purpose of this Japanese Kanji and Kana Workbook is to help students of Japanese master writing the two phonetic kana syllabaries (46 hiragana and 46 katakana) and 617 basic characters from the official Jōyō Kanji list. The 617 kanji are divided into three levels that roughly correspond to the first three levels from N5 to N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) of the Japan Foundation.
Each kanji is accompanied by information about it: its stroke sequence, its officially recognized readings, its most important definitions, and up to four useful compounds in which the kanji appears.
